2020

FuDaoLe // 福倒了 reimagines the patterns surrounding the traditional symbol of good fortune, to be ones wishing for queer joy and interconnected love. The wall hanging with the word fu 福 (roughly translated as ‘fortune’), is traditionally hung upside down to signify gratitude. ‘To hang upside down’ is translated to dao le 倒了 in Chinese, which phonetically sounds like 到了, meaning ‘to have arrived’. To hang the 福 upside down, then, is to proclaim fortune has already arrived. In my version, the patterns are redrawn with their vision of queer joy, in love, embrace, and dance. To hang the piece upside down, then, asserts there is space for this vision in the already - in the present.
